I Found A Dog Chained To Drown In A Flood And Saving Her Almost Got Me Killed

Image
I found her chained to a cinder block in three feet of floodwater, and somebody had put her there on purpose. The hurricane had hit two days before. I live in Louisiana, been through storms my whole life. This one was bad. Whole neighborhoods underwater. People evacuated. Roads closed. I was helping with search and rescue. Detour through a neighborhood I’d never been in. Heard screaming from a backyard. Not human screaming. Worse. A man was standing over her with a tow chain. Swinging it like a bat. She was on the ground trying to crawl away but she had nowhere to go. I was in his yard before I knew what I was doing. Screaming at him. Calling 911 with one hand. Blocking her with my body. He got a citation. A fifty-dollar citation. She got a fractured hip, two broken ribs, and wounds so infected the vet said another week would have killed her...
